Temporary Crown Care Instructions

Temporary Crown Care Instructions:

At your first appointment, a temporary restoration will be placed on the tooth/teeth that were prepped, in order to protect the area while the lab is creating your permanent crown. You will have a temporary crown for approximately two weeks. These simple care instructions will help you care for your temporary crown in the meantime.

  • Avoid any sticky, chewy, or hard foods such as caramel or nuts.
  • Avoid using a Waterpik on that tooth as it can come loose.
  • Brush the area gently and use a mouth rinse as part of your brushing routine.
  • While flossing, pull the floss through, rather than up, to avoid popping the temporary off.
  • Your gums in that area may be sensitive for a few days. A warm saltwater rinse a few times a day will help with any discomfort.
  • Your bite may feel different with the temporary restoration in. If it becomes uncomfortable or painful to bite and chew, please call our office so that we can make any needed adjustments.

If your temporary does come off, attempt to put it back on with toothpaste or denture adhesive, and call our office right away so that we can put it back in place. If it is after hours or over a weekend, put a small amount of toothpaste or denture adhesive inside the temporary and put it back on if you can. Take it out when you sleep to avoid swallowing it, but make sure to replace it before you eat or drink. Call our office at 702-331-2121 and leave a message so that we can get you in as soon as possible to put it back in.
