Teeth naturally darken as we age, but certain types of food and beverages can also cause staining. There are many reasons why people want white teeth, but mostly it's because they look healthier and more attractive. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic procedure that can help you attain a bright, white smile. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures.

What are the Different Types of Teeth Whitening Treatments?

Teeth whitening treatments remove stains beneath the surface of your teeth to brighten your smile. You can whiten your teeth at home using over-the-counter whitening treatments, however, these products are not as strong nor efficient. At our office, we offer two whitening options:

Custom-Tray Teeth Whitening

Custom whitening trays are applied for 30 minutes a day. We will instruct you on how to use these trays. Some people choose to wear these trays overnight, while others prefer to wear them for a shorter period of time, like 15 minutes a day. Results vary, but custom trays can whiten teeth in several shades. The dentist will provide the trays, solutions, and instructions you need.

Pre-filled Bleaching Trays

Pre-filled bleaching trays are pre-made trays used to whiten teeth. The trays are worn over your teeth for a specified amount of time each day. Each case is different, though, so be sure to ask the dentist how long you should wear your bleaching trays each day. Some patients prefer pre-filled bleaching trays because they are easy to use and convenient.

What are the Aftercare Tips for Teeth Whitening?

The aftercare tips for teeth whitening are as follows:

  • Avoid foods and drinks that stain your teeth. Tea, coffee, and dark wine are just a few foods and drinks that you should avoid because they tend to leave stains on your teeth.

  • To prolong your teeth whitening results, brush your teeth twice daily with the recommended toothpaste.

  • While you're wearing your trays, you should be sure to keep your teeth clean. Brushing and flossing your teeth after every meal should be your top priority.

  • After you have had your teeth whitening, your dentist may recommend ongoing care, so make sure to visit for regular dental checkups and cleanings.

  • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco as these factors can stain your teeth.
